Rev. Valerie J. Melvin is the first born of James Lee Melvin and Ada Knight Melvin of Goldsboro,NC. As a child, Rev. Melvin’s musical talent was discovered almost immediately and she spent a considerable part of her adolescence in piano and voice lessons.
Rev Melvin was called into the Gospel ministry when she was 18 years of age. In 1978 she was attending her high school graduation when she heard the audible voice of God say, “Teach my people because ignorance abounds.” The charge was crystal clear, but as many youth do, she played the role of the prodigal daughter.
Upon completion of high school Rev. Melvin attended undergraduate school at Atlantic Christian College(now Barton College) in Wilson,NC. She graduated in 1983 with a B.S. Degree in Music Education. After graduating she moved to Atlantic City, NJ and began working in education and other areas as she searched for her place in the world. This experience yielded various lessons in life, chiefly wisdom.
After 13 years of wandering, Rev. Melvin submitted to the will of God and his plan for her life. She received one year of pastoral counseling and then delivered her initial sermon on May 2, 1993 at St. Mark Church of Christ, Disciples of Christ, – her home church.

She served for 8½ years as Secretary of the Goldsboro-Raleigh District Assembly. On August 25, 2007 Rev. Melvin was installed as the Associate Regional Minister of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in North Carolina.
